France Ban on Social Media for Under-15s

PARIS – France’s National Assembly on Monday approved legislation to ban children under 15 from social media platforms. Lawmakers cited growing concerns about online bullying and mental health risks. The bill also targets social networking features inside larger digital platforms. Officials said the move reflects rising public concern over the impact of social media on minors.

President Emmanuel Macron has strongly supported the proposal. He said social media contributes to violence and harmful behavior among young people. Macron wants the ban enforced before the next academic year in September. He urged France to follow Australia’s example, which introduced a similar ban for under-16s in December. Several countries are now studying Australia’s approach.

Supporters of the bill stressed the need to protect children’s wellbeing. Lawmaker Laure Miller told parliament that social media is not harmless. She said children read less, sleep less, and compare themselves more online. She described the law as a fight to protect young minds and mental health. Many lawmakers echoed concerns about long-term social harm.

The proposed ban would require platforms to block access through legal age-verification systems. Enforcing the rules may prove difficult, as Australia faced challenges after its ban took effect. The French legislation also expands an existing smartphone ban in schools to include high schools. Officials said these steps aim to reduce screen addiction among students.

Public support for the ban remains strong in France. A 2024 survey showed 73% of citizens favor restricting social media access for under-15s. However, teenagers in Paris expressed mixed opinions about the plan. While some acknowledged online dangers, others felt a full ban goes too far.
